As a parent or caregiver it can be overwhelming at times, to figure out what your child’s needs and wants are. You think they want one thing, but you try giving it them and they push it out of the way adding to their frustration that you, their parent or caregiver, just “doesn’t know” what it is they need or want. So, what does your child do? He begins or continues crying– only this time at a louder volume and you begin looking for anything you can to distract them. Keys jingling, crackers he loves, his reflections in the mirror…..but, nothing is working. You sit there and wish your child could talk and simply tell you what’s wrong or what he needs. Wouldn’t it be nice to alleviate some of their frustration (and yours) if your child simply had a way to communicate his needs?

How can I communicate with my child who is not using words yet? If you are like many parents out there, finding a way for your child to express his needs and desires is one area you will go to great lengths to figure out. Helping your child discover signs is a positive and encouraging way to teach another method of communication.

In today’s society, there is a growing wealth of knowledge and awareness which backs up babies really can recognize that a word, sign, or symbol can represent something else and have meaning behind it. According to Dr. Acredolo and Dr. Goodwyn, two decades of scientific research has shown the benefits of using sign language with hearing babies. In this study, language development and intellectual development seemed to be significantly greater in signing babies. At a later age these children had scored higher in IQ than their non-signing peers. This is just one example of one study. Other benefits of signing to hearing children include social-emotional benefits.

Discovering how to sign with your child as a way to communicate their needs leads to so many other advantages. Reflect on how you communicate with your babies and toddlers, and how your children express their needs. Ask yourself: If my child had a way to “show” me what he needed would he be less frustrated when I couldn’t simply figure out what he wants? Would I be more observant and learn to respond to my child’s needs if he knew how to sign as a means of communication? Baby signing is an innovative way to communicate and is booming in the United States and around the world.

I read an article about parent involvement yesterday, and it got me thinking about the parent workshops we held in the fall at several schools in Austin. The workshops were a success, and we had positive feedback from all the parents who attended! One particular parent stood out, as her comment after the session was, “Do you know what you can do to make these better? Make sure you keep having them!” Comments like these let us know there was an interest and desire for parents to learn ways to help their children at home. The obstacle, though, was how can we continue to hold these workshops for parents when the school’s budget is so small? It becomes frustrating at times knowing that the idea behind it is desired and needed, but the funding behind the idea throws a curve ball into the equation.
I am certain we will find a way (at some point) to continue holding these parent workshops which help parents discover strategies, tips, and tools to reinforce the reading skills.

I’ve heard Baby Read-Aloud Basics, is a great book. I haven’t read it yet, but it will be one that I put on my list of soon to read books.

It is never too early to read to your child. Even babies enjoy and benefit from the children’s books you read to them. They enjoy listening and interacting with you as you turn the pages of the book, point to the words on the pages, and look at the simple or colorful (and sometimes interactive) illustrations in the story. Children are exposed to (and learn) an enormous amount from the language they hear, even before they are able to speak.

Did you know according to the U.S. Department of Education, “…children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading as kids who are not read to?”

There have been many studies which back up the fact that reading to your child (no matter how young) has a great deal of benefits. Below are some of the benefits:
• increase speech and language development
• introduces a child to communication
• introduces basic concepts (numbers, letters, colors, shapes)
• develops listening skills
• fosters vocabulary skills
• introduces a child to the world around them
• builds intelligence

So, ensure that your baby grows up to love and value literacy. Read to him often, create an environment filled with books, and model your own love for literacy!
