Parent Involvement Tips
WeeTeachIt™ focuses on providing parents with tools, activities, and strategies that will optimize parent involvement while reinforcing the skills being taught in the classroom. As you are well aware research shows, “The more intensively parents are involved in their children’s learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects. This holds true for all types of parent involvement in children’s learning, and for all types and ages of students.” School Improvement Research Series by Kathleen Cotton and Karen Reed Wikelund; 2001 Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
Parent involvement is more than joining the PTA or PTO at your child’s school. It is more than attending parent conferences and helping with classroom parties and fundraisers. Your child’s academic and social achievement can be affected by the involvement you show at home, regarding your child’s learning.
General Parent Tips to remember when working with your child:
- Use a fun, upbeat, and positive tone in your voice as songs are sung and stories and poems are read.
- Show your child how much fun learning can be by being enthusiastic yourself.
- Model what you want your child to do. Model again if they are unclear about expectations.
- Praise and encourage your child’s successes.
- Involve the entire family in learning activities.
- Create routines and set aside a certain time every day for educational activities and games.
- Use motivational tools and props to peak your child’s interest.
- Let your child guide his learning.
- Encourage and challenge your child, but not to the point of frustration.
- Add your own creative twists to any learning activity.
- Make every day a “teachable moment”. Have daily conversations about various topics.
