Phonemic Awareness Activities
Phonemic Awareness is a building block for a strong foundation in reading. It is the ability to “recognize that a spoken word consists of a sequence of individual sounds” (Ball and Blachman 1991), and the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words. Research has shown that phonemic awareness instruction is important because it increases reading and spelling achievement among preschoolers, primary-grade children, and students with learning disabilities (Ball and Blachman, 1991: Lundberg, Frost, and Petersen, 1988: Yopp, 1992).
Each activity below was created to help your child practice various skills which build phonemic awareness, in a FUN and engaging way. These activities and games are designed to optimize your involvement with your child as you help reinforce skills such as rhyming, sound manipulation, blending, and segmenting.
