• Print Awareness

Knowing how to “use” a book seems like such a simple thing that does not need to be taught – holding a book right side up, opening a book from right to left, turning the pages from right to left, and knowing that we read the words starting at the left of the page and moving to the right. As adults, these actions come so natural for us, but developing print awareness in young children is a skill which needs to be taught.

Developing print awareness in young children is an important foundation as children begin to read. Print awareness is a building block and an awareness of print all around. It is the understanding of the concepts of printed language and how this language works. The National Institute for Literacy “A Child Becomes a Reader” is a great resource of proven ideas from research for parents.
