• Twinkle, Twinkle Melody

This morning I began, as I often do, gathering information about reading strategies, best practices, and struggling readers. While reading many articles, I came across one which talked about using music to teach reading, rhymes and build fluency using the Twinkle, Twinkle melody. It was mentioned how this “strategy” could work with any rhyming book. So, during my search I stopped and pulled out the final draft of Mr. Wee and Boo’s Wee-phabet Adventure (the soon to be printed children’s ABC book which I am co-author of), and started “singing” the words from the children’s book - to the Twinkle, Twinkle melody. I have to giggle, because I was having so much fun “reading” this way, and thought to myself how my 1st and 2nd graders (if I were still in the classroom) would have enjoyed this!

As the day went by, the melody and story stuck in my head and I started “singing” the story again to my boyfriend’s daughter. She LOVED it! She’s only 4 ½ years old, and by the end of the day she was reciting (almost word for word) up to the letter D page from the book. She was tracking the words with her finger, as she has watched me model this often, and was “reading” the words from the story using the Twinkle, Twinkle melody.

Her excitement, interest, and interaction with the book and using this melody has gotten my mind whirling with new ideas and ways to help children with reading.
